Who (doesn’t) need a diploma today - opinion on higher education

These days, the labor market is overcrowded with specialists from all fields of knowledge who wish to get a stable, prestigious job with a high level of pay. And finding your dream job is very difficult now. After all, it is not enough to present a diploma of education: candidates for vacant positions are also expected to have additional skills, they look approvingly at certificates of completion of advanced training courses, and take into account real work experience in a similar position.

What if you graduated from university, but they don’t hire you? The answer is simple: you can become a more valuable person by completing a master's degree in your specialty. In this article, we will tell you what you need to do to get a higher education through correspondence, and how a master's degree will help you build your career.

Master's degree: benefits for employment

Let's look at how a master's degree compares favorably with a regular bachelor's degree and how it can affect your employment. As the results of an economic and sociological study by the Higher School of Economics showed, there are several advantages.

First, students with a master's degree earn more. Thus, already at their first job, they receive a salary on average 30% higher than bachelors.

Secondly, masters have an advantage over bachelors in the speed of their career growth. Promotion occurs within the first six months to a year, and such employees are more often offered management positions and positions with higher qualifications.

Thirdly, it is easier for masters to find a job. The reason is that the three-stage education system, consisting of bachelor's, master's and postgraduate degrees, has existed in our country relatively recently. The division of the specialty into two levels leads to the fact that many employers do not take those who have completed only a bachelor's degree too seriously. And employers who do not have such prejudices tend to place more trust in candidates who have also completed a master’s degree.

Fourthly, a master's degree, unlike a bachelor's degree, has status and significance abroad. So if in the future you want to get a job in one of the European countries or in the USA, it is better to have a master's degree. Studying a master's degree is also relevant if you want to get an education abroad and your goal is a doctorate.

A master's degree provides many significant advantages in employment, and not only decorates your resume in the “Your education” column. So getting it means making a great investment in your future career. We'll talk about the easiest way to get a master's degree later.

Myth 3. You need to start from scratch if you want to build a career

That is, there is no need to be shy, even with fresh crisps about higher education in your pocket, rearranging goods on a shelf as a merchandiser or pestering people with phone calls while working as a sales representative or consultant. Yes, many companies implement the following concept: “Today you are a sales agent, and tomorrow you will become a director.” But aren’t the authors of these optimistic slogans being disingenuous? If we look at practice and statistical data, it immediately becomes clear that for 95% of specialists in such companies, their career ends exactly at the stage from which it began.

Distance learning for your future

If you decide to get another education, distance learning is exactly what you were looking for! Such education will help you save not only your time, but also money.

Correspondence studies can be of two types:

  • traditional with periodic attendance at examination sessions;
  • distance or distance learning.

Traditional distance learning involves a flexible schedule of attending lectures and seminars throughout the semester. However, the examination session at the end of each semester is carried out by the student personally, within the walls of the educational institution. Such education is much more convenient than full-time study, however, it is not suitable for those who live far from the university and are bound by work or family responsibilities.

Distance or distance learning involves a completely free schedule. You do not have to visit the educational institution either during the semester or during the session. All materials and textbooks that you will need will be provided in electronic format or will be contained in the university's electronic library.

All contacts with teachers will be made via email, and exams and tests will be taken remotely using Skype. Distance education is ideal for those who want to study in their free time, without interrupting work and devoting enough time to their family.

Distance education is:

  • convenient study schedule, thanks to which you can study and work at the same time;
  • remote learning, which will allow you to independently allocate time for classes, for example, only in the evenings or on weekends;
  • studying at a prestigious educational institution, even if it is located geographically far from you: in another city or even in another country;
  • inexpensive, high-quality education, which turns out to be more accessible, since it requires fewer resources from the university;
  • a diploma that is no different from diplomas obtained as full-time students at regular universities;
  • the opportunity to study and at the same time create a family and have children.

List of documents

A package of these documents is needed to get a job according to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, with reference to Article 65 of the Labor Code:

  • Passport or similar identification documentation.
  • Employment history. You do not need to have a work book in the following situations: firstly, if you are being hired for the first time; secondly, if a candidate for a job position has lost or is severely damaged (another one is made); thirdly, if the applicant for a vacant position is already working in one organization, and is getting a part-time job in another.
  • For men: a military ID, a registration certificate indicating whether the procedure for military registration was carried out, or a “white” ticket that exempts you from the obligation to serve.
  • SNILS (insurance certificate of state pension insurance). If employment in an official organization is carried out for the first time, this document is issued by the employer.
  • An educational document, which is either a school certificate or a diploma of secondary specialized or higher education. Such documents are required for the employer to obtain information about the qualifications of the applicant for a vacant position. For a large number of professions, it is necessary to provide a certificate confirming qualifications (for example: 3rd category mechanic). These specialists annually, or according to the law, after a longer period of time, undergo re-certification, which is noted in the corresponding document.
  • Certificate of criminal record. Required when applying for a workplace to which persons with a criminal record or under criminal prosecution are not allowed.
  • Medical certificate. A medical certificate or book is required in activities that pose a health hazard or are prohibited for persons with certain health limitations. To ensure compliance with certain physical characteristics, the employer requests such a document from the applicant.

The only document required to be presented during admission, both for temporary and permanent employment, is a passport of a citizen of the Russian Federation or any other document confirming identity. Other documents are provided at the request of the employer.

Master's degree: distance learning

Now let's look at what opportunities everyone who wants to get a higher education by correspondence has in Moscow.

One of the popular educational institutions where you can do this is Synergy University. It has been conducting educational activities for more than 30 years and is a leading educational institution specializing in distance education in our country.

Synergy University offers 11 master's programs with a duration of study ranging from two to two and a half years. Upon completion of the program, you receive a state diploma.

Master's programs at Synergy University:

We accept minors according to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation

Required documents for admission according to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation:

  1. Consent of one parent or guardian of the applicant.
  2. Certificate of completion of basic general education.
  3. In case of completion of training, a certificate of the teenager’s lesson plan and lesson schedule, so that the work does not interfere with the continued improvement of the level of knowledge.
  4. A medical certificate with the result allowing you to apply for a job.

Of course, in addition to additional documentation, the following are required to be presented: passport, work book and SNILS (if available) and a military registration document.

Minors are prohibited from working in places where there is an increased danger to health and in hazardous industries.

How a school certificate depreciated and turned into an unnecessary “crust” for show

Why do you need a certificate? Today this is not a rhetorical question. There is a healthy dose of bewilderment and, if you like, sarcasm. I completely understand children and parents who ask this question with certain intonations. Indeed, my experience as a mother shows that the status of this document is zero. In Russian this is called “needed for show.”

A school certificate is included in the list of documents for admission to a university. I have double experience in admitting children, as I am the mother of two twin sons. In both cases, no one on the admissions committee even thought about looking at my children’s certificates. This picture is still before my eyes. The nice girl at the admissions office, with a quick, well-trained movement, separates the insert with grades from the certificate, keeps the blue crust for herself, and gives the insert, folded in four, to the owner without looking.

So maybe it’s not needed? Alas, no, modern laws do not provide for admission to universities without a document of secondary education. Moreover, it is its original, brought to the university in the summer, that will indicate the seriousness of your intentions. When you finally decide on the choice of institute or university, the last point of your admission will be a trip to the university in order to bring the original certificate of secondary education to the admissions office.

How is obtaining a certificate related to passing the Unified State Exam?

There is, of course, a connection, but it is selective. The first thing you should know: if you have bad grades in the year or have not passed the final essay (received a “failure”), then you are not allowed to take the Unified State Exam.

. Accordingly, you will not see either a certificate or a university. The essay can be rewritten twice; in 2020, the dates for additional exams are February 1 and May 3.

Second. Unified State Examination points

in compulsory subjects (Russian language and mathematics)
do not affect the grade on the certificate
. In accordance with the Procedure for filling out, recording and issuing certificates of basic general and secondary general education and their duplicates, approved by Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia dated February 14, 2014 No. 115, grades in the certificate are the arithmetic average of six-month and annual grades.

10 useful sites for graduates and applicants

If you did not pass the required exams, that is, you did not score 36 points in Russian, 27 in the specialized level of mathematics, or received a failure in the basic level of mathematics, in short, if you did not pass Russian and mathematics, then you are given the opportunity to retake these subjects in the same year . If it fails the second time, then you definitely won’t receive a certificate. You are only given a certificate stating that you studied at such and such a school.

Separately, it is necessary to say about mathematics. Now it can be taken in two versions: basic level and specialized. There is a lot of confusion in this regard. Some choose only one option, and some take two exams at once. What to do if you fail and there are not enough points. Here is the official information from the website ege.edu.ru. I advise you to read it slowly and carefully.

“Red” certificate and gold-silver

A certificate with honors, as well as a medal “For special achievements in learning” - all this wealth can add several points to those that will accumulate after all the exams. How much exactly? The answer to this question depends on the university you choose. They are not established centrally; each university invents its own correspondence table.

For individual achievements, each university in the country has the right to add a maximum of 10 points. These include Olympiads, GTOs, final essays, and volunteer work. How many of them will “weigh” a certificate with A’s or a gold TRP badge - you can find out at the university admissions office or on the official website. I advise you to be sure to collect complete information about the number of additional points for individual achievements at your universities in order to prepare the necessary documents in advance.

5 ways to get extra points for the Unified State Exam

Well, in closing I want to say what I think about all this. My whole nature, if you like, violently protests against this state of affairs. Both as a mother and as a teacher, I do not understand why the status of a school certificate has become so devalued. The connection between 11 years of study and final exams is difficult to call logical. Let's compare the numbers.

The certificate reflects a system of knowledge that has been systematically assessed for 11 years, and at the same time has a status below the plinth. 11 years of life!

Unified State Examination in compulsory subjects - two trips to the exam. It takes 3 hours and 30 minutes to write Russian. Basic mathematics - 3 hours, profile - 3 hours 55 minutes. At the same time, the status of the Unified State Exam is very high, since it gives you a chance to enter a university. It turns out that the fateful decisions of your life or the life of your child were given over to a three-hour test, which is still not entirely scientifically substantiated?

The tasks of the Unified State Exam have been constantly changing and improving for 15 years now (the official start of the Unified State Exam in Russia was given in 2001 by a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation - Author's note), which means that they are far from ideal from the point of view of objectivity. The new Minister of Education does not hesitate to constantly voice that the current form of the Unified State Exam does not completely suit her.

How to survive failure on the Unified State Exam

Few people know, but the official error in the Unified State Exam scoring method is from 5 to 10 points. Accuracy is the allowance for error in measurements. That is, they gave you 80 points for the Unified State Exam, but in fact it could be another number, the range is from 5 to 10 points. It is especially great, according to the creators of the Unified State Exam, just after 80 points. And you and I know that 80 points is the threshold beyond which the main battles for budget places are fought. That is, errors are possible in assessing knowledge when making a fateful decision when applying for a budget job. If there are two applicants on the rating list with similar scores, it is not a fact that the knowledge of the one whose scores are higher is better than his competitor with lower scores. I read about this in an article by the ideologist and author of the Unified State Exam tests, Vladimir Khlebnikov.

A disappointing conclusion suggests itself: the Unified State Exam is not an objective instrument reflecting the readiness of a high school graduate to become a university applicant. If universities require an assessment of a student’s knowledge, expressed in as many as 100 maximum points, then why can’t these scores include the child’s success over all 11 years of study?

The student earned points with blood and sweat for his many years of study, put them in a piggy bank, and let the points for the Unified State Exam be the “cherry on the cake”

This is where I see the logic. By the way, a cumulative system for calculating final points can help solve the problem of “two birds with one stone” in high school, when specialized education forces you to prioritize your studies in favor of subjects that are “unnecessary” for admission. It is no secret that in classes where the graduate does not have to write the Unified State Exam, many students either “sit back”, doing nothing, or are absent altogether.

Did the Unified State Exam live up to huge expectations?

And yet I would like to dream that a child will someday receive a certificate at graduation with sincere joy and pride, as if his first honest salary, and not as an unnecessary “crust.”
