How much does a paramedic earn in Moscow, regions of Russia and abroad?

A paramedic is a specialist with secondary vocational education. His responsibilities include the initial examination of patients and their referral to a doctor of a certain profile. Can work in an ambulance, directly in a hospital, paramedic stations in rural areas. The main specialization is providing emergency medical care before arriving at the hospital. So, what is the average salary for an emergency medical technician in 2021?

What influences the salary?

How much a paramedic earns in Russia is influenced by several factors. The first and most important of them is regional affiliation. Those who work in the capital or large regional cities will always receive an order of magnitude higher than those who work in the countryside. The next thing that influences the salary is the place of work. A government-supported hospital will always pay less than a private clinic.

The main income of a paramedic is salary. The rest is the number of hours worked, the rate of pay, and additional payment for length of service. There are good compensation benefits when working in the north.

How much a paramedic receives per month is influenced by the level of qualifications and the assigned tariff category. Every five years, they, like other employees of medical institutions, need to undergo advanced training courses. The higher the category, the higher the salary.

The work and responsibilities of a paramedic

So how much does a paramedic earn? Before answering this question, let’s consider what the responsibilities of such a specialist are. The main tasks of a paramedic are:

  • provision of pre-resuscitation actions (cardiac massage, defibrillation, intubation of respiratory organs, etc.);
  • assistance at the beginning of labor;
  • interpretation of the electrocardiogram;
  • making a preliminary diagnosis for the patient;
  • prescribing treatment for the disease at the initial stage.

It is worth noting that the functions and responsibilities of a paramedic are practically no different from the duties of a doctor. For example, if the doctor is not present in the ambulance, then the paramedic will be the doctor.

He will prescribe medications and manage the process of providing assistance. If not, then he will have to follow the instructions and recommendations of a specialist of a higher rank.

In such cases, the paramedic is an assistant and is involved in moving the patient, measuring blood pressure, etc. If the paramedic has extensive experience, he can become an assistant in operations.

What does it take to become a paramedic?

To obtain a paramedic diploma you must:

  1. Complete 9th or 11th grade of school.
  2. Go to medical college.
  3. Successfully complete your studies and receive the appropriate diploma.

Paramedic education can be obtained at almost any medical college. It is worth considering that training in the specialization “general medicine” is possible only on the basis of 11 classes.

Depending on the education received, a paramedic can work in the following areas:

  • obstetrician;

  • children's paramedic;
  • laboratory assistant;
  • sanitary paramedic;
  • military;
  • district police officer;
  • Ambulance.

Does the salary of emergency doctors depend on length of service, experience and qualifications?

Before answering this question, I will make a small clarification. From the point of view of the average person, all members of the ambulance team, not counting, of course, the driver, are doctors.

Actually this is not true. A fully staffed ambulance team consists of a doctor, paramedic, paramedic and driver.

A doctor is a specialist with higher education; he graduated from a medical institute (academy or university). The paramedic has a secondary specialized education; he received his diploma from a medical school or college.

At best, orderlies have completed short-term courses—completely random people often end up in this position.

So, an ambulance team ideally has at least two medical specialists. But this is ideal.

In fact, due to a chronic shortage of personnel, ambulance and emergency teams often consist of two people: a driver and (at best) a doctor. By the way, do you know how an emergency room differs from an ambulance?

An ambulance arrives in emergency cases when there is an immediate threat to the patient’s life, and an ambulance arrives when there is no such threat.

According to existing standards, an ambulance should arrive at the patient a maximum of twenty minutes after the call, and an ambulance can take as long as two hours to reach the patient.

Both ambulance and emergency help are called by the same phone number - 03 (or 103); What type of assistance the call relates to is determined by the dispatcher.

So, very often it turns out that the ambulance team only has a paramedic, whom ordinary people mistake for a doctor.

A doctor’s earnings are based on a salary or base rate, the amount of which is determined by the category of specialist and varies from region to region.

The base rate is multiplied by the so-called “participation factor”, determined by the total number of calls. On average, during one daily duty, an ambulance makes 15–20 calls.

According to existing standards, an ambulance team is on duty every other day, but due to an acute shortage of personnel, many doctors are on duty much more often, which significantly affects the size of their salary.

In addition to salary, doctors and emergency paramedics receive additional payments for:

  • harmfulness;
  • experience;
  • work on holidays;
  • night duty;
  • combination of positions.
