Regardless of how old the child is, you need to remember that age is determined at the time of boarding the train. And if the child’s birthday occurs after purchasing the ticket, but before the trip, you need to issue the ticket as if the birthday had already passed.
When you buy children's train tickets for a small child, you need to decide what is more important - comfort or money. There are two options to choose from:
— travel with a child in one seat, but at the cost of only one “adult” ticket;
— or pay an additional 35-50% of the cost of an “adult” ticket so that the child has a separate seat.
In addition, even if the cost of a train ticket for a child is zero, you will still have to get his form at the station or go through electronic registration.
To buy a children's train ticket, you will need the child's birth certificate
. From May 14, 2021, parents of children under 1 month of age who have not yet received a birth certificate can purchase a ticket by presenting a medical certificate of the child’s birth. You can buy such a ticket only at the ticket office at the station. The certificate must indicate the series and number of the document, as well as the baby’s full name.
Children over 10 years old
Schoolchildren from 10 years old from January 1 to May 31 and from September 1 to December 31 can purchase a ticket with a discount of up to 50%. The discount is valid only for tickets within Russia in reserved seat, general and seated carriages of non-branded trains.
Traveling in the same categories of carriages on branded trains will cost a student more. In addition to 50% of the fare on a non-branded train, you will need to pay the difference between the fare on a branded and non-branded train.
The discount does not apply to high-speed trains (No. 701–788), for example, “Sapsan”, “Lastochka”, “Strizh”. The discount cannot be combined with other promotions and is valid only for citizens of the Russian Federation.
A certificate from the school is not required when purchasing a ticket. But a certificate will be required when boarding the train.
Tickets for schoolchildren can be purchased on the website tutu.ru. The discount is applied automatically.
Tariff "Happy Holidays"
On Tutu.ru, when purchasing tickets for FPK trains, the “Happy Vacations” tariff applies: tickets for children aged 10 to 17 years inclusive are sold at a 50% discount.
The discount applies to travel from June 1 to August 31, 2020 on domestic routes
in reserved seats, general carriages, seated carriages of fast and long-distance passenger trains (including branded ones), as well as in 2nd and 3rd class carriages of multi-unit rolling stock (high-speed trains numbered 800).
The discount is applied automatically on the website if the passenger’s age qualifies for the special fare. The discount on the “Happy Vacations” tariff cannot be combined with other discounts and promotions.

For long distance trains

- A certificate from the school confirming your studies. But you only need to provide it when purchasing a ticket for a child aged 14 to 17 years. For children 10–14 years old, this document can only be shown on the train. The certificate must bear the seal of the school, as well as the signature of the director of the educational institution.
For a child who is already 10 years old, the ticket price will be calculated as for an adult. The exception is schoolchildren during the study period, that is, from September 1 to May 31. For this period of time, schoolchildren are given a 50% discount on railway tickets. In addition, military school cadets can also count on such a discount. This discount applies to reserved seat carriages. To purchase a ticket at a discounted price, you will need to provide the following documents:
Up to what age can a child travel for free?
When traveling to foreign countries, the discount for children under 12 years of age will be about 50%. We are talking about the following destinations from Moscow: Paris, Vienna, Prague and Nice. And from St. Petersburg - to Vienna, Prague.
- The promotion is valid only for domestic Russian trains,
- The discount cannot be combined with other Russian Railways special offers,
- there is no discount if the ticket is purchased at a group rate,
- The discount is not available for compartments on train No. 145/146 Moscow–Nazran.

Children's tickets at Sapsan
Sapsan has two tariffs suitable for children: “Children” (up to 10 years old) and “Junior” (from 10 to 21 years old).
"Children's" (up to 10 years old).
The cost of a child's ticket to Sapsan starts from 366 rubles per ticket. The tariff applies to all classes of service. When purchasing a ticket, select “child ticket with seat.”
"Junior" (from 10 to 21 years old).
The tariff gives a 30% discount when purchasing an adult ticket. When boarding the train, you must present proof of age. The tariff does not apply to the purchase of tickets for first class carriages and compartments with meeting rooms.
On the Tutu.ru website, the discount is applied automatically if the passenger’s age qualifies for the special fare. The price including the discount is displayed at the “Complete order” stage.
What are the benefits for schoolchildren on train tickets in 2021?

If two adults and children are traveling in a compartment (one or two children under 10 years old), then to obtain a free ticket for a child under 10 years old, you need to contact the railway ticket office at the station.
Transporting children in a soft carriage of the Strizh train Moscow - Berlin:
- if there is only one adult passenger in a compartment, he can carry one child under 12 years old (the fare is called “Adult-Single”);
- if two adult passengers are traveling, they can carry two children under 4 years old (Adult “Family” fare).
Carriage of children in a soft carriage of trains No. 17/18 (Moscow - Petrozavodsk) and No. 23/24 (Moscow - Kazan):
- if there is only one adult passenger, he can carry one child under 12 years old (Adult-Single fare);
- two adult passengers can carry two children under 4 years old or one child under 12 years old (Adult “Family” fare).
If two adults are traveling in a compartment, then to issue an additional child ticket you need to contact the railway ticket office at the station.
How has the size of the benefit changed over the past 3 years?
There are no plans to further increase the discount for school students in 2021. A maximum passenger of 10-17 years old will be allowed to travel by rail with a 50% discount. Important: the presence of at least one parent or guardian when traveling with a child is mandatory. If accompanying adults cannot travel with the student, they are required to provide the conductor with a certificate that they do not object to the child traveling independently on railway transport. The certificate must be properly executed and certified by a notary . A handwritten version of the permit will not be considered by inspectors as a document confirming the child’s right to travel without an accompanying person.
What is the size of the benefit in 2021?
