Labor Relations
How to formalize labor relations in order to avoid further discrepancies?
We inherited job descriptions from Soviet labor legislation. These should be considered the “starting point” in corporate (industrial) relations between the manager and staff. Therefore, without delay, get down to drawing up a job description.
Remember: a job description is a local document and applies exclusively to employees of your company . It should take into account the specific features of your enterprise.
An instruction “borrowed” from another company without making changes may in some way not correspond to the internal order of yours. You should also not use the same instructions for professions that, at first glance, do not differ significantly from each other.
Let's say, if you have a cashier and a senior cashier, then their job descriptions should be drawn up taking into account the characteristics of each position.
The same should be taken into account in instructions for cashiers of various enterprises : supermarkets, banks or factories.
For example, in a store , a cashier calculates the cost of goods purchased by the buyer by making settlement transactions in cash or by card. A bank teller works not only with money (often in different currencies), but also with securities.
A cashier at an enterprise is, in most cases, an accountant or an accounting specialist who accepts payment from clients for services (goods) provided by this enterprise; in rare cases, he pays salaries to employees “the old fashioned way.” You can familiarize yourself with the nuances of job descriptions for a cashier at an enterprise, a cashier at a shopping mall and for other specialties here.
When drawing up a document, you must immediately define the concept of “senior cashier” . In one case, this may be a position, as stated above. In the second - simply a qualification characteristic. In this case, their job descriptions (and, accordingly, the functions) of a cashier and a senior cashier may differ little.
The senior cashier, as we see from the title of the position, already occupies a higher position in the hierarchy ; his responsibility increases in direct proportion to his duties. This should be reflected in the job description.
We compose, approve, put into action!
The document is developed by the personnel service, personnel (if there is one), approved by the head of the specific structural unit where the senior cashier is sent, or by the head of the company itself. Its structure may differ from the standard one . Again, it’s up to the manager to decide.
Typically, such a document contains at least four full parts:
- "General provisions";
- “Job responsibilities” (or functional);
- "Rights";
- "Responsibility".
The instructions can be supplemented with sections “Relationships at work”, “Working conditions” and others.
Let's consider how each section of the senior cashier's job description should be filled with content.
Sample job description for senior cashier.
Selling clean water
Companies selling clean water differ in the “composition” of required cashiers from a regular store. There is no need to keep a large number of employees for cash service. But you still can’t do it without a senior cashier.
The senior operator must know:
- bank and cash documents;
- compiling and maintaining a cash book;
- rules for handling computer equipment, cash registers, detectors, terminals;
- regulatory documents, internal regulations and rules of operation of the enterprise;
- labor discipline rules, fire safety rules;
- basics of labor legislation.
A person applying for such a position must have professional computer skills, know accounting programs and be able to use them.
The employee must have a higher economic or accounting education and work experience, because responsibility is assumed to be high:
- safety of funds;
- preparation of daily reports;
- transactions with non-cash payments from customers;
- carrying out inventory;
- drawing up collection documents, transferring funds to the bank at the end of the working day;
- maintaining an inventory of old banknotes, handing them over in a separate bundle to the bank and providing the necessary documents;
- transactions with currency, non-cash money;
- limits on cash balances at the end of the working day at the enterprise (individual for each enterprise);
- registration of incoming/outgoing cash documents;
- rules for registration and implementation of document flow;
- knowledge of the profile and structure of the enterprise;
- timely and quick decision-making in emergency situations;
- knowledge of regulations, regulations, instructions for conducting cash transactions.
A senior operator must be able to understand people when hiring them. So he independently selects his subordinates with whom he will have to work. The interview and training of cashier-operators is conducted by a senior cashier.
The senior cashier is subordinate to the chief accountant; accordingly, it is necessary to report on the work done and fulfill the requirements of the chief accountant.

“General provisions”: what and how to formulate?
This is the “introductory part” of the document. It should contain a block of points relating to the legislative framework and qualification requirements for a person applying for the position of senior cashier.
Conditions such as education, experience, possession of certain skills (working with a PC, etc.) are also possible.
The section can be formulated using the following points:
