Job description of a housekeeper: rights and responsibilities

Who is the wardrobemaid

The word "castella" comes from the Latin "castellum" (castle). It was used to designate a person who, in the absence of a feudal lord, was responsible for managing the castle household and surrounding areas. He was also responsible for maintaining the garrison soldiers and servants.

In the modern world, housekeepers only look after kindergartens, rest homes and medical institutions, and the list of their responsibilities includes storing and issuing linen, as well as collecting it and sending it to the laundry. Moreover, this position is now considered purely female.

The profession of a housekeeper became most widespread during the Soviet era, when such workers were engaged in maintaining order in numerous sanatoriums, hospitals, other medical institutions, recreation centers and even industrial enterprises. This work is not particularly difficult, but it requires a person to have several valuable qualities at once: accuracy, attentiveness and thrift.

It should be borne in mind that such a position does not imply much career growth, however, sufficiently diligent employees can subsequently take the place of a supply manager or warehouse manager.

In order to work as a castellan there is no need to receive any education. The specificity of this profession is such that the main thing in it is not the level of knowledge, but economic acumen, which is impossible to learn in any educational institution.

Enterprises that require such specialists take upon themselves the issues of training them. Most often, novice specialists learn to work with the necessary documentation, study product quality standards and gain the necessary practical skills. If the scale of the enterprise allows, then young specialists work under the supervision of a more experienced employee.

But it should be noted that for the most part, employers give preference to candidates with education. And at the same time, the education received may not correspond to the profile of work.

Rights

A special section describing the rights of a housekeeper is introduced only in cases where the conditions of her work imply the existence of rights in addition to those already enshrined in the labor legislation of the Russian Federation, including:

  • taking actions aimed at eliminating or preventing possible inconsistencies and violations;
  • receiving a legally required package of social guarantees;
  • sending a request for documentation, as well as other materials and information required to perform work duties and solve priority tasks;

  • increasing the level of professional training;
  • transferring to superiors information about violations identified during work, making proposals for their elimination;
  • study of documentation that reflects the employee’s job responsibilities, as well as criteria for assessing the quality of their performance.

First of all, the castellan herself must take care of the use of all granted rights.

Career prospects for a housekeeper

housekeeper's work photo

There is practically no development within the profession, perhaps minimal. But career growth largely depends on the company, the number of its employees, and active activities. Thus, a housekeeper can rise through the leadership line if she works in large hotels or large industries. However, for career growth it is recommended to obtain special education. The most preferred direction is management in the hotel business.

Responsibility

Since the wardrobe maid is in charge of the storage and accounting of items that represent a certain material value, an agreement can be concluded with her on full responsibility for their safety (Resolution of the Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation dated December 31, 2002 No. 85).

When signing an employment contract, the specialist must be aware of what he is financially responsible for. Lawyers advise you to sign an additional agreement on this.

There are other types of responsibilities that apply to a person holding this position:

  • for failure to fulfill or untimely fulfillment of duties specified in the job description;
  • for failure to comply or compliance with established standards of provisions enshrined in the relevant documentation of the institution, or legal orders of management personnel;

    Specialists of this profile are in demand in organizations that, for one reason or another, must have a uniform. The list of possible places of work may include:

    1. hospitals and other healthcare facilities;
    2. kindergartens and boarding schools;
    3. research laboratories;
    4. construction companies;
    5. transport companies;
    6. industrial enterprises;
    7. hotel business.

    If, for example, a housekeeper works in a large hotel, then she is responsible not only for the staff uniform, but also bed linen, towels and much more. Naturally, such a volume of work cannot be carried out conscientiously by one specialist, so a whole staff of employees works in this area. And for better coordination of their work, a leader is selected. And if a housekeeper works in a kindergarten, then this is the only specialist. And her work schedule corresponds to the kindergarten’s work schedule, that is, Saturday and Sunday are days off.

    A castellan is considered to be an employee of an institution who is responsible for storing and issuing clothing, as well as linen.

    History of the profession:

    The origins of this profession go back to the distant times of monarchs. Many years ago, people served in the courts of feudal lords whose duties included managing the castle and surrounding areas in the absence of the rightful owner. They also provided the servants at court and the soldiers of the castle garrison with everything they needed. All financial expenses had to be entered into a special book. At that time, the profession was extremely honorable, and the work of castellans was well paid.

    Nowadays, the profession of a housekeeper is predominantly female. The responsibilities of female employees have changed dramatically. At the same time, there remained a distant similarity with medieval traditions. Castellans of that time monitored the safety of clothing, bedding and tablecloths. Only wealthy people could afford to buy such products made from high-quality fabric, so maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of things was also the responsibility of the castellan.

    Features of the profession:

    Today, the profession is quite common, because many organizations provide special clothing and shoes. There is a need for employees who will be responsible for issuing them to the rest of the institution’s employees, as well as competently maintaining accounting documentation.
